These “unicorns of the sea” spurred medieval mystery.During medieval times, traders used narwhal “horns” to prove the existence of the magical, mythical unicorn. Today, we know that the male narwhal’s “horn” is actually a twisted tooth, or tusk. What we don’t know is how the narwhal uses its tusk—some say it’s for jousting when competing for females, while others believe the tusk helps a narwhal send the sounds it makes.
