The name pangolin comes from an Indonesian word meaning “something that rolls up”. When threatened, this scale-covered mammal tucks its face under its tail and curls into a ball, allowing its hard, razor-sharp scales to serve as a kind of amour. For added protection, the pangolin emits a noxious-smelling acid--similar to a skunk’s spray.
